One of the first soldiers killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom was born in Guatemala. The twenty-five year old marine, José Antonio Gutiérrez, died on March 21st 2003 near the southern city of Umm Qasr.
Lance Corporal José Antonio Gutiérrez, of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division out of Camp Pendelton, California, was orphaned in Guatemala and grew up on the streets. As a young man he came to the U.S. to fulfill his dream of becoming an architect. Because he looked young for his age, he was able to attend high school and, as a minor, he was able to get a green card. This immigrant, who gave his life for the United States, was not an American citizen.
Like José Antonio, many immigrants have died—and continue to die—in defense of the United States of America.
